Topic: Digital Media Occupational Technologies in Entertainment

Goals:

  1. Determine in-demand skills for the digital media-entertainment sub-sector
    1. Incumbent worker
    2. Entry-level worker
  2. Launch a LAOCRC wide CTE discussion regarding stackable credentials for students to attain digital media-entertainment jobs or to upgrade their skills through incumbent worker training.

Method:

  1. Invite relevant CTE Deans (and selected Faculty) from LAOCRC
  2. Initial skills 'panel discussion' where selected industry representatives who hire or supervise the students we train help us understand the 'in-demand' skills required in today's entertainment-industry marketplace. They will also explain job transitions that may happen based on the relevant skills sets. For example, how an incoming assistant with advanced web skills may soon find themselves an exec in the publicity department owing to their understanding of "back end" web development; or a student with some basic editing skills can quickly be promoted to a digital wrangler on set (or in post production).
  3. Breakout into logical subgroups, i.e. Front Office, Production, Post Production, and Digital Archive Management, and capture key skills and technologies (software, equipment, proficiencies, etc.). For example, on-set skills can include a wide variety of apps (such as electronic slate; the various color correction algorithms for on-set "video village" where key personnel can view footage; and even on-set editing for those with basic editing skills). Digital archive management is a vastly growing field with management of legacy formats, transfer to new formats, safekeeping and backup strategies, and delivery coordination being key newer positions that are experiencing expansion.
  4. Initiate 'call-to-action' among LAOCRC CTE Deans to collaborate on developing a 'mosaic' of curriculum throughout LAOCRC that could serve these workforce needs. Agree in principal to collaborate on articulation and joint certifications. Explain how on-staff professional experts can help with curriculum review and development, as well as the creation of digital media assets to bring employer needs into the classroom directly from those employers.
