Digital Media Regional Advisory Emphasizes Student Accountability
The 2nd Annual Digital Media Regional CTE Advisory and Skills Panel was held on October 26, 2018 at The Life Arts Center in Riverside. The event, led by Susanne Mata, Deputy Sector Navigator for Information & Communications Technologies and Digital Media in the Inland Empire/Desert Region, was planned as a part of the Strong Workforce Program’s Regional CTE Advisory Project.
The meeting had a true regional presence with more than 100 educators, business professionals and students in attendance, representing multiple Riverside and San Bernardino County community colleges including College of the Desert, Chaffey College, Mt. San Jacinto College, Riverside City College and San Bernardino Valley College as well as K12 District and ROP educators and administrators.
Paul Granillo, President & CEO of Inland Empire Economic Partnership, facilitated the Industry Skills Panel that explored topics ranging from hiring practices and desired skills to technology, trends, and student internships.
One of the key aspects of the Regional Advisories are the breakout sessions that are held as part of the event. Breakout sessions are organized based on sub-sectors and allow individuals in attendance to have a choice on what topic they would like to further discuss or acquire information about. This provides a great opportunity for students, educators and industry experts to collaborate.
Multiple educators and industry professionals expressed the importance of soft skills and accountability. Knowing how to be on time, appropriate behavior and attire in the workplace, and having proper social skills to speak politely and respectfully to others. In addition, the ability to work with others and in groups is important.
Mike Norkin, of Cherished Memories Photography, stated “Students and interns need to take accountability of their actions and work. Time is money and there are deadlines, and working extra hours is necessary for tasks to be completed.” Norkin also said that he requires his employees to put their cell phones away in lockers during working hours, so it doesn’t become a distraction.
